NEA Part 1 - media language and representations
                                                                                                                   Tuesday 12th March 2019

1) As you can see on the front cover, there are lines of other stories and the main image on the front cover will be the main story. also in some of the corners there are bits that inform you of the price, issue number and bar code. The close up shot on the front cover makes people want to read the full story to gain a better understanding of it. The blue/ dark blue/ black colour creates a mysterious effect, where the reader will want to find out more.

2)  this is instantly enticing as the top of the cover it mentions how drought is normal, which will draw people in as it is not normal at the moment. As well as this the colours are also mysterious because of it is in space. The sort of far away shot of the balloon makes you want to read ab  out it as it is so odd and no one would have seen the picture before.

3) This article has everything to draw you in, the big picture, the enticing title and the colour scheme. The article has different heading to show different thing in the story. This makes for a great double page as there is not to much to read and you already know what it is from the title. The medium range shot shows you a happy, new employee as the title is about an interview. The plain background makes you focus on the person in the image and it encourages you to read the article as there is not much else on the page. The bright lighting and the well dressed model signifies a comfortable mood for an interview, when it can be quite nerve racking in the real interview.

4) The orange colour of the title makes you know instantly what you are looking at and what the article will be about. The different pictures in the article allow you to understand how the story works and what it is about. Again the background is plain which makes you only look at the article. However the way the pictures are laid out on different sides of the article makes you look at them more than you look at the article, which could be a down side. The small paragraphs makes the magazine easier and funner to read as it doesn't look like much to read, before you get to the main pint of the article. The colour of the article is relaxing, which therefore makes the story more interesting and enjoyable.

  • Describe the main characters/people in the media products... E.g. Gender, Age, Race.
  • Are they represented positively or negatively? What gives you this impression?
  • What media language elements are they using to construct these representations? For this, don't just look at the obvious, look at everything around the people too, such as colour of text (magazine) or non-diegetic music in the background (video), mise-on-scene (video and magazine, online), etc.
  • How do logos and other graphics help construct the brand identity of your chosen products?
  • How do the colour schemes help construct the brand identity of your chosen products?
  • Are there are intertextuality elements that help create meaning?
  • What type of shot/music are they using?

  • What connotations do the colours they use have?
  • What does the set represent the time and place of the situation?
  • What does the make-up and hair used say about the characters/models?
  • What does the body language say about the attitudes of the characters/models used?
  • What connotations can the type of lighting used in the shot/scenes have? How does it help create representation?
